In Mexico City, a protest took a dramatic turn when demonstrators drove a pickup truck through a door of the presidential palace. The protesters were expressing their anger over the unresolved case of 43 students who disappeared in 2014, an event later described by an investigative commission as “a crime of the state.” Continued below the clip
At the time of the protest, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was inside the palace, conducting a daily press conference. Despite the disturbance, the president assured that the damaged door would be repaired and that there wouldn’t be any significant issue. He also mentioned that the protesters would have the opportunity to meet with members of his government to discuss their concerns.
The 2014 incident involved students from Ayotzinapa who were attacked by municipal police as they returned from a protest. The students claimed they were hitching a ride on buses that the police alleged had been hijacked. This tragic encounter resulted in three students being killed, with one of them found mutilated the next day.
During the protest at the presidential palace, police used tear gas to manage the crowd, and additional barriers were set up inside to prevent further intrusion. Although the situation eventually calmed down, with the palace door secured and no protesters inside, the incident highlighted the ongoing tension surrounding the case of the missing students.
President Lopez Obrador emphasized his commitment to continuing the investigation into the students’ disappearance, one of Mexico’s most notorious cases of violence. He also criticized some of the protesters and rights groups, suggesting they were attempting to provoke the government, although he did not provide evidence for these claims.

In response to the protest and the president’s comments, the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center (Prodh), representing the families of the missing students, called for a respectful dialogue with the government. They also refuted claims of manipulating the families of the victims and stressed the importance of communication in resolving the case.
